Lesson 5
We can safely say that music consists of formulas, or other words, patterns or clusters that are often repeated. So, recognize notes as clusters of notes rather than as single individual note. For example, if you know what a scale passage, pentatonic scale, rhythm figure, chord etc. looks like, then when you meet these elements, you can easily identify and play them.
It is very similar to when you read the book. When you read you don’t focus on one letter at time, but you recognize letters as words, and you focus on the words or sentences
Accordingly, in the process of learning to read music, try to notice and remember elements that are often repeated. Paying attention to this, you will notice that many elements are repeated in different styles, and in different compositions. Recognizing these patterns or clusters will make your sight reading much easier.
