Lesson 3

Time signature 3/4 means you have three beats per bar, and a quarter note gets a beat. This time signature sounds light and rhythmic and is also known as waltz rhythm. Typically, you will accentuate the first note slightly and play the next two a little softer. This is in keeping with the “down, up, up” manner of waltz step dancers as they glide across the floor.

4/4 has a more “square” feel, while 3/4 has a more “round” feel.

3/4  is more common in European folk and classical music. Waltzes are especially popular in Germany, Austria, France and Italy.
